Sleep Cycle

My boyfriend and I have been using the Sleep Cycle iPhone app for the past two weeks. I’ve been surprised by its accuracy, and find it completely fascinating.

Sleep Cycle uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to measure your movement while you sleep. Less movement = deeper sleep. I was a bit skeptical, but it does seem to track these patterns properly. The time when I’m up in the middle of the night matches the peak on my graph the next day. Maybe most amazingly, there’s no interference from the movement on the other side of the bed.

I’ve had extreme difficulty staying asleep for the past year and a half. No night is without a wake-up about four hours in. I’ve tried everything from vitamins to Ambien, which nearly killed me (do NOT use Ambien!!). I’ve also tried old-fashioned stuff like herbal tea, milk, and even a potato before bed. (Funnily enough, the potato did the best job, but I’m not too stoked on loading up on carbs before each night’s sleep.)

To give you an idea, here is last night:

It should look more like this:

Basically, I sleep backwards.

Sleep Cycle doesn’t tell you how to solve these kinds of problems, but it does let you track the results of small changes in your pre-sleep routine. It also lets you wake up more gently, which is huge. If you set your alarm for 8 a.m., it will go off anywhere from 7:45 to 8:15, choosing the period of lightest sleep. I’d say this works well about 75% of the time for me, which is much better than without.

Sleep Cycle’s on sale right now for $0.99.

i've tried it a couple of nights now, and to be honest I was surprised how well it worked, but i didn't like all the messing with the linen and charger and making sure i don't kick it out every night.

I have now invested a little and own a real sleep phase alarm clock (www.axbo.com) and to be honest i wouldn't wanna go back. it's so much more precice and less hassle when I just quickly wanna go to bed.

Interesting! We actually don't mess with the charger bit. If you make sure it's fully charged before you go to sleep, it's no problem at all to just use it on battery. I don't mind moving the sheets.

Oh man, I have thought that an alarm clock that did this would be amazing, ever since I found out about how sleep works. I had no idea it existed though, and especially not as a freakin' iPhone app. The axbo would be cheaper than switching to an iPhone probably (though not by much) and I've officially added it to the list of things to budget for! I would need to train myself to work with it, because often I will wake earlier than my alarm and be fully alert but stubbornly refuse to get up, but then when my alarm goes off, I am like dead. I know the reasons behind this, but I have such a hard time getting out of bed, no matter the circumstance.

I am still feeling fucked up by the switch to generic (and now the switch back) Effexor and I ended up taking a klonopin at 3am last night finally. Leo has found out who manufactures the round xanax (which are good for us for sleep, versus the oval xanax that gives both of us nightmares and unrestful sleep) now we just need to find a pharmacy that stocks the round kind. It's amazing how such tiny differences (not the shape, obviously) in SSRI medications can make such huge impacts.

Plus, it's just kind of cool the be able to chart your sleep. *dork*
