I love this post. Being a tad (or actually incredibly) vain myself, I do know the feeling of accomplishment when you let go of coolness and just go with what feels nice :) Hooray for shedding hipsterdom!

I kind of imagined that to keep bees you just had to put them in boxes, make sure they're collecting pollen and not dying, and then spray them with that fog stuff and take the honey when it's ready. Unsurprisingly, it's a lot more complicated than that, because the way bee society operates is complicated. Apparently, a main duty of the beekeeper is to make sure the bees don't "swarm." Swarming = half of the bees leaving the hive completely to start a new one. From what I can tell, the bees do this if they're not happy with the queen, or feeling crowded. So the beekeeper has to watch for signs of swarming, like the creation of new queen cells. How they prevent things from escalating after catching these signs, exactly, I don't know yet. Crazy stuff!

The Florida Museum sounds cool. I've actually never been to Tallahassee and probably "should" since it's the capital of the state in which I vote.

Hah! This is particularly funny to me because I just bought "Bay Area Blend" honey from the Farmer's Market. I agree though, it somehow feels like something that is a direct connection to the place where it was created. Also, I have super romantic ideas about beekeeping, and would love to hear more about the assuredly less romantic realities of it.

My favorite "zoo" is in kind of a random hole -- it's the Florida Museum in Tallahassee, FL (locally known as the "junior museum" though I don't remember why.) It is a rescue of local animals and it has the biggest enclosures of any zoo I've ever been to. In fact, they're not really enclosures...it's all build around a giant cypress swamp and there are some chainlink fences and nets to keep predator and prey apart by and large everyone is living au natural. Going in the morning helps to see all the beasties in their frisky states. The Sonoran Desert Museum in Arizona is also one of the better large-enclosure museums I've been to. Now I'll add Norden's Ark of my list of acceptable 'zoos' to visit.

Good job being the only PoPer to not pathetically suck at our restart. To misquote Miss O'Hara, "next Monday is another day."

Hi Stef,

Thanks for getting in touch! I'm glad you dig my blog -- and that you're sympathetic to the plight of the expat sambo. I've sent you an email about meeting up!
